“Studies estimate that 33% of children who enter the foster care system have a chronic health condition”- Claudia Boyd-Barrett
The foster care system is a state-regulated program so every state has slightly different system for licensing. Still, generally, children who have any special needs have a much longer wait to secure a permanent home. Many of these children can be autistic, have fetal alcohol syndrome, shaken baby syndrome or other “invisible” disabilities that show up later in life.
Many parents are opting for an NIPT test at 10-14 weeks and they may receive some disappointing results. The NIPT test can detect Trisomy 21, Trisomy 18, and Trisomy 13, but these tests can also be wrong. If a parent-to-be would like to confirm the results, an amniocentesis can take place at 16 weeks. This is not without risk and can induce miscarriage.
One option that is not as widely publicized is that there is an option for adoption for that family if they are not prepared to take on the responsibility of a special needs child. The parents have the option of finding an adoptive family for their baby if they feel that the medical unknowns may be too much for them to take on. There are many families who would love that child and are prepared to parent a special needs baby.
With the rise of IVF, there are now over 1 million embryos frozen in the United States. These embryos frequently undergo testing and depending on the results, many embryos are discarded.
Studies have shown that these tests can prove very misleading, and doctors admit that an embryo could be tested multiple times and results can be different each time it is tested. Unfortunately, parents-to-be are making permanent decisions based off the results of these expensive and lucrative (to the clinic) tests. Additionally, the clinics use “success” rates to lure in clients so very few clinics will transfer a mosaic or abnormal embryo because the likelihood of miscarriage can be higher.
